***********
Great Swiss Mountain Dogs were bred as Working dogs.
Cason Callaway has been training "Jazzy" for Search and Rescue work since she was a year old .
Cason is doing a great service not only to his community but to the GSMD breed
by training Jazzy (and his other Swissy, "Radar") for this important search work.
In 2002 Cason and his dog "Rhett Butler" were honored with the GSMDCA
Ambassador of the Breed Award for their Search and Rescue work in Georgia.
Below are some photos of "Jazzy" in training and some information about her
training and progress provided by her owner and trainer, Cason Callaway.
We are so proud of Cason and "Jazzy" and wish them success with their ongoing training and exciting work!
Notice "Jazzy's" smile in the photo below!
Clearly she is very happy to be a working girl and knows when she has done a good job !
At the end of 2007, Jazzy passed her NAPWDA (North American Police Work Dog Association) certification
test for cadaver search work !

Jazzy climbs rubble pile for trace search |
Jazzy searching rubble pile (She is ten feet up on the pile, well over the handler/photographer's head ) |
Jazzy "alerting" to source in the rubble. Her alert to her handler (owner Cason Callaway) is to lie down which is why you only see her head. |
"Jazzy" ready and willing to search the red carpet |
"First we are members of South Georgia Search Dogs and the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.
She has been in training a little over a year now and is certified under National Narcotic Detection Dogs Association (NNDDA). She will be going for her certification from the North American Police Working Dogs Association (NAPWDA) and
her International Police Working Dogs Association (IPWDA) certification later this year.
Jazzy is my Human Remains Detection dog. This is her job and she loves it.
She has been working on sources buried for one year, two years and three years. I have also been working her on trace amounts, such as a drop of blood on a penny. She has been alerting on bones that are over a hundred years old that
have also been bleached. She has been exposed to animal remains and does not alert on them.
She has been working around vehicles and rubble piles.
She will be starting water training this Friday and I hope to have her ready to test on this in a month.
Our group is also trying to find collapsed buildings to work her over.
This will be the tough one as we will have to have
human food inside the building and she is not allowed to go for it.
Our training generally takes about two years to get totally operational to the point
where theycan go on all of the callouts.
She is very slow and methodical in the way she searches and this is good for trace."
